In my younger years, I remember watching episodes featuring the masked crusader, Zorro. Recently, Zorro the Chronicles was released by Montreal-based studio, BKOM, and is based on an animated series of the same name. The game has been created in action-adventure genre and is geared toward children and the entire family. It is available for PC, Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox 1, and Xbox Series XS.
It can be hard to find a family-friendly game. In this game, you do use a whip as a weapon, but there is no gore in this title. Your sword can leave a “Z” on an enemy’s shirt and you can stun them, but no damage is shown beyond that. There is action and even some humor included in this game.
My daughter has tried out playing Zorro the Chronicles as one of the two characters, Don Diego, a teen who faces the greatest challenges of his life by fighting numerous unscupulous enemies. I have used his fearless sister, Ines, as the chosen hero. Ines has an extra heart to give you more life and I believe Diego has a lightning bolt to give the character more stamina. The scenery in the game is from Spanish-dominated 19th Century California.
Before every mission, players get to choose a starting location on the map, which directly affects the game’s style and can lead to a stealthy approach or more of a frontal assault. To vanquish villain Monasterio’s soldiers, Zorro can employ a range of techniques, including using sound as a distraction, reaching high places with the aid of his famous whip, and leveraging the environment to his advantage. Experience points are earned with each successful parries and combos made while disarming enemies or marking them with a “Z”.
My daughter and I thought this game was very fun. She and I haven’t finished the game yet, but have enjoyed many of the challenges. Zorro the Chronicles is a one-player game and I think great for tweens and above.
