I have had the opportunity to do some reviews lately on products that contain xylitol. Xylitol is being found in more and more beneficial applications for people from a sweetener safe for diabetics, sugar free baked goods, toothpaste, gum, nasal spray rinse, and many more.
I was a veterinary technician for eight years and wanted to make you aware that xylitol is toxic to dogs and possibly ferrets. It only takes a little xylitol to cause your dog’s blood sugar to drop and then cause vomiting, loss of coordination, collapse, seizures, or even liver failure.
Please be aware of what products in your home contain xylitol and keep them out of reach from your pet. If you think your pet has ingested a product with xylitol, contact your veterinarian immediately or the Animal Poison Control Center.
Never presume that what is safe for us to ingest is equally safe for our pets.
