IMG_0553 My children have been fighting over the chance to use the VTech Kidizoom Smart Watch, “The Smartest Watch for Kids”.  This little gadget is labeled for children 4+ and came out on the market just last month.

The Smartwatch comes with 128 MB internal memory and stores about 800 photos or six 1 minute videos.  A small amount of memory is used to hold the camera software and data.   A 2.0 micro USB cable is included to charge the battery and to transfer files.  The battery is a built-in and not replaceable.  It is a rechargeable Li Ion polymer battery.  The battery will give users approximately 2 weeks on low usage – 1 day on heavy usage before needing to be recharged.   IMG_0555 The battery switch is located on the back of the watch for turning the device on and off.  The battery should be charged before initial use and surprising a full charge only takes about 3 hours.  The battery switch must be on to charge the device.  IMG_0556 Upon initial usage, it is asked to set the date and time which can be easily adjusted by the user friendly 1.41″ color touch screen.IMG_0559 IMG_0560 Here is the micro USB port with tip up rubber cover and a shutter button to operate the camera and take photos.  It’s important to keep the rubber cover closed tightly to prevent water from getting in the micro USB port.IMG_1196The other side has a home button.  If the screen is off, this button will wake up the watch.  It is also used to enter the home menu or go back to the previous menu.  If the screen is on with clock displayed, you can hold the button for a second and turn the display off.IMG_1197The VTech Kidizoom Smartwatch feature specs:

  • 640×480 (0.3 MP) photo resolution
  • 320×240 pixel or 160×120 pixel @ fps
  • 60 second video length limit per file
  • Approximately 1.5 feet focus range
  • Photos are in JPEG and videos in AVI extensions
  • It works optimally at 32°F-104°F
  • Uses an auto-ISO value.  It auto adjusts to the exposure time and light sensitivity based on the lighting environment

Here are some images with photo effects that my children created. 100_0008 100_0020 100_0109 100_0110 100_0113 100_0114 The videos and photographs are astoundingly clear and my children have had tons of fun recording audio files.   The VTech Kidizoom Smartwatch has been very easy for them to use and apply the features.  To my surprise, they have discovered so much on their own with just playing with the Smartwatch.

As far as locating the files when the Kidizoom Smartwatch is attached to your computer, it is like using any other media device.  Simply hook it up with the provided USB cable and look for the device and its folders in your file manager.  The user manual will provide you with the minimum requirements of your computer to work with VTech Kidizoom Smartwatch and it does work with both PCs and Macs.
