Unfortunately, I am plagued with quite a sweet tooth and sometimes crave a salty snack, but are there any snacks that are actually more healthy than others? Andrea Donsky and Randy Boyer, creates of NaturallySavvy.com, with Lisa Tsakos, have collaborated to create a book of healthy alternatives to mainstream snacks.
Unjunk Your Junk Food is a small reference book, great even to stick in your purse while out shopping. Each two page spread has a “Bad Choice”, ingredients of the product, a thumb’s up, down, or neutral regarding the ingredients, and then a Naturally Savvy Seal of Approval to recognize a healthier option. A “Honorable Mention(s)” for runners-up of the product approved for a healthier option is also included.
Then there is a section on the basics of reading and understanding food labels. Before diving into the products featured, fundamentals of the “well-balanced diet” are stated with definitions to some of the hard to understand ingredients that are actually okay for you and a separate chapter on the bad ingredients to scope out on product labels.
This book has nice, colored photographs of the products that are a “bad choice” and those that are “Naturally Savvy Approved”. The information included on the products researched are easy to understand and follow.
Since I live in a small town, the nearest store to buy most of the approved products highlighted in this book are about an hour away. Unjunk Your Junk Food does give me vital information on what is bad to look for in products that are locally available though. A glossary of terms, where to find some of the products with websites of their brand, and a couple blank pages for notes are included the rear of the book Overall, this book is packed with information. Unfortunately, harder to find the suggested products in my local area.
Disclosure: I received a copy of this book through the Naturally Savvy blogger program. The thoughts and feelings discussed are my own. No other compensation was received.
