Today, UNDERDOGS was released on DVD, digital HD, and On Demand from Anchor Bay Entertainment. It features the voice talents of Ariana Grande, Matthew Morrison, Nicholas Hoult, Eugenio Derbez, Bella Thorne, John Leguizamo & Mel Brooks.
UNDERDOGS is a unique, animated title. It follows a shy guy named Jake (Morrison) who has an amazing talent for playing foosball. He befriends a girl named Laura (Ariana Grande). With Laura’s boasting, Jake beats the town bully, Ace (Nicholas Hoult), in a foosball game when they are children.
Fast forward several years. Jake is about to share his feelings of love to Laura and she gives him the news of her acceptance into art school. She is excited to leave their small town and find what out what the world behind its borders has to offer.
Ace comes back to their small town as the world’s best soccer player with plans to turn it into a new sports stadium! He starts to destroy everything and kidnaps Laura. Jake’s tears shed from the loss of his favorite foosball table oddly manage to bring the team players to real life in this animated film. He and the team captain take off to reunite with the other players and rescue Laura. Jake and Laura then recruit a team to take on Ace’s team in a rematch. The winner gets possession of their small town. Jake’s little foosball players come out on the field to help his team.
My children have watched UNDERDOGS a couple of times already. It’s a nice story of how you don’t have to be the best. Just make sure you try your best in whatever you do. “It’s not the numbers on the scoreboard that count. It’s who’s at your side.”
Run time: 86 minutes
Rated: PG due to some rude humor and mild action
