When my oldest was three, she decided to bounce on my exercise ball while surrounded by a menagerie of Lego® Duplo® blocks. My husband and I where both around her and repeatedly told her to get off, physically removed her from the ball, and thought we had hidden the ball well enough at one point for her to leave it alone, but she kept finding ways to get back on.
One high bounce caused her to be propelled off the ball and land face first onto the back edge of one of the plastic blocks. One of our scariest moments as a parent! She cut her cheek in two spots and had butterfly sutures applied to her wounds.
Our oldest is now seven and yet has visible scars from the incident. We had applied Derma e® Scar Gel when the wounds had initially closed and recently tried a silicone based product called ScarAway®. These discs and sheets apply slight pressure to the scar, which acts like the natural barrier function of healthy skin. It diminishes the scar’s appearance and restores the skin to a natural color and texture.
I am going to share both products with you, but our experience is based on the ScarAway® Silicone Daily Discs.
ScarAway® Silicone Daily Discs use an advanced silicone technology to help shrink, flatten, and fade new and old scars. They are applied once a day and measure 1.375″. They are ideal for scars 1″ in size or smaller. This could be from injuries, burns, surgery, acne, biopsies, and more.
To apply, the scar area should be washed and dried. Peel one Daily Disc from the clear plastic sheet. Apply with the adhesive side down and silicone center directly on the scar. Press down firmly to make sure there is an even seal. Wear the disc a minimum of 12 hours or up to 24 hours. Dispose after use and repeat daily with a new disc.
They are thin, clear, and in a matte texture. Silicone Daily Discs are very hard to see when applied. My daughter has not objected to wearing the Daily Discs and we have been taking them off after 12 hours.
ScarAway® Silicone Daily Discs come in a box of 30. We have missed a few nights and have 11 discs left. This is what my daughter’s scars now look like below. 🙂 Scars may feel softer in just a few days with visible results noted in as little as 4-8 weeks. Individual results will vary. ScarAway® Silicone Daily Discs have a suggested retail of $24.99 for a box of 30 Daily Discs.
ScarAway Flex Long Sheets use new Flexisil™ technology to also help shrink, flatten, and fade scars, but work on longer scars, like c-sections, orthopedic procedures, and stretch marks, as well as burns and injuries. They have the capability to stretch and yet adhere well so they stay put on or near joints.
Wash and dry the area being applied to. Remove from the liner sheet and apply with the adhesive side directly on the scar. Each sheet should be worn a minimum of 12 hours per day and is washable and durable for 14 days of use! Gently wash sheet daily to allow it to still stick. They are non-greasy and will not stain clothing. Improvement of appearance and texture can be seen as quickly as 4-8 weeks. Flex Long Sheets are an FDA Class 1 Medical Device. Suggested retail is $29.99 for a box of 6 sheets, a two month supply.
ScarAway® products are available at Walgreen’s, Harmon, and online at Drugstore.com. They are available over-the-counter without a prescription. For more information on these two products, please visit MyScarAway.com.
