Escape of the KILLER Noun is the first installment in The Magic Chalk series. This book features the third grade class of Tom Orson Elementary through the eyes of one of their students named Rusty.
It was to be an ordinary day of class until they met Mr. Graham, their substitute teacher. Mr. Graham tossed the worksheets to the wind, which were set aside by their usual teacher of language arts class, Ms. Jones. He introduces the kids to his set of five chalks that are magical.
If you use them to write a noun, the subject will come to life, like writing the word “unicorn” on the chalkboard and then having a beautiful white unicorn appear in the classroom. Once the words are wiped off the chalkboard, the creations will disappear. The unicorn is pretty tame in comparison to some of the other things that appear, like the classroom converting into a swimming pool and Albert Einstein joining the class.
A student named Nicky can’t wait for his turn at the chalkboard to write a KILLER noun. His noun ends up being a type of carnivorous dinosaur called a Coelophysis. The dinosaur eats the eraser and breaks the chalkboard before walking out of the classroom to cause some havoc in the school.
My eight-year-old daughter thoroughly enjoyed Escape of the KILLER Noun. This title is recommended for children in grades 1-4. The print is decent sized and there are a few black and white sketches included in the book.
This title is available on Amazon.com for $5.69 in paperback (111 pages) or Kindle for $2.99. This first volume is set up nicely to run into other adventures in future installments.
