The Darkest Minds came out on Blu-ray and DVD on October 30th. I didn’t hear much press about this movie coming out, but it is great! We sat down to watch this title as a family when the review title arrived.
Children are dying from unknown causes and the only ones to survive have special powers. Ruby (Amandla Stenberg) wakes up on the night after her 10th birthday and goes to her parents’ bedroom. She touches her mother’s arm and all of a sudden her mom wakes up and does not know who Ruby is. Her mom tells her to go into the garage and locks her in.
The government quickly comes in and takes Ruby to a “rehabilitation” camp for children with special abilities. Ruby is identified as one with the strongest set of abilities and is labeled to be destroyed. With her powers, she is able to change the mindset of the doctor doing her initial examination and also changes her file to save herself. Years go by and Ruby is now 16 and manages to escape. She befriends a group of runaway teens.
This group of teens includes a young girl named Zu, a brainiac called Chubs, and Liam, the leader of the group. Liam likes Ruby, but she is afraid to let anyone get close to her after she unknowingly wiped herself from her parents’ memories.
This story has lots of twists and turns. Who will Ruby and this group of teens be able to trust and finally help them?
The Darkest Minds is based on The Darkest Minds series by Alexandra Bracken. It is rated PG-13 and has a run time of 104 minutes.
