What are you agreeing to when you say “I do”? When a couple promises “I do,” they agree to more than just a shared last name, a joint bank account, and no more dateless nights. This husband and wife duo forms a new team. “Life together” becomes their mantra. Nothing can come between them. At least, that’s the plan. But then real life sets in. With it come disappointments and frustrations. If the couple isn’t intentional in their day-to-day interactions, that once enthusiastic “we” can slowly revert to “you” and “me.” Before long, the couple’s left wondering what happened to their team spirit.
Review: Ashleigh Slater and her husband, Ted, have been married 11 years. In her first book, she openly shares what she has learned through their years of marriage. My spouse and I will be celebrating year #16 this May so I feel that I can really relate to many of Ashleigh’s experiences and wholeheartedly agree with considering a marriage as “Team Us”, not “Me and You”.
My spouse and I often reflect on an elderly couple from our wedding reception and unfortunately I don’t remember how many years they had been married at the time, but said give 90% and take 10% in your marriage, which kind of goes with the cooperation and commitment Ashleigh wants us to embrace as couples. Staying together takes work to reap the unlimited rewards.
Team Us is 166 pages, 10 chapters in length. I recently finished the book and need to have my spouse read it too. There is a bank of questions at the end of each chapter to have each spouse answer and discuss.
I know the dynamic of couples varies quite a bit, but I could see Team Us be of some benefit to a couple who has been dating for a while with marriage in the future and certainly a married couples who want to enrich their current relationship.
