Some of you may have gotten the hint that I love cookbooks. I love to try new recipes and ways to present healthy and nutritious meals for my family. It has been a long process of self educating and share tips with friends.
Students Go Gourmet is to assist novices in the kitchen, like maybe a teen or new high school grad, or even just someone who wants to try an elegant dish, but yet make it be simple and affordable. The authors, Sophia Khan, world traveler and recent grad of Harvard and Yale, and her aunt, Dr. Ellen Bass, ER pediatrician and working mom of four, share their love of fast, delicious, and healthy food.
Don’t worry about boring with this book. There are recipes like Lavender Ice Cream Sandwiches, Chicken and Sausage Gumbo, and New Orleans Spicy White Bean and Garlic Dip, to name a few.
I don’t know about you, but I enjoy a photo of the finished production when using a cookbook. Each recipe is accompanied by approximately a 3/4 page image of the dish. The recipes state the typical ingredients and directions, but also includes equipment needed and the average cost to make, which I think would be a large asset to someone new in the kitchen.
Students Go Gourmet also includes an instructional DVD. This is very informative, even probably throwing new techniques and information to those who have been cooking for a while. I learned a lot from the section on knives, but there are also techniques on how to properly prepare fresh herbs, time saving tips, and others. One time saving tip featured in the video was one that I ran across on my own by accident. If you spray your measuring spoon with cooking spray and then measure out your honey, it practically slides right off the spoon!
Students Go Gourmet is a unique find. It features cuisine from around the world done in a fashion that is simple and affordable. So far I have made Classic Hummus and Greek Honey Yogurt and my family gave them both positive reviews.
This book has a suggested retail of $29.95. It is available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. If you would like to sample the recipes that are included on the DVD, please go to http://www.studentsgogourmet.com/recipes.html
A portion of the proceeds from the sales of Students Go Gourmet will be donated to sustainable and post-hurricane redevelopment efforts in the Ninth Ward in New Orleans.
