Spider Hair Clips

spider16I enjoy reading I Like Big Bows.  She compiles some fun hair accessory tutorials and this one is from Crafting Mom.

You will need the following:

  • black felt
  • thin ribbon
  • glue gun
  • pair of small googly eyes
  • 1/4″ black ribbon
  • 1/4″ wooden dowel and metal clips for curling ribbon
  • single prong alligator clip

If this is your first time curling ribbon, please visit the link to CraftingMom provided above.  She includes a great tutorial.

The circles I cut were 1″ for the head (need 2) and 1 1/2″ for body (need 2)  I have an old Sizzix that I punched the circles out with.  Then cut two slits in one of the pieces for the body.  This will be for your hair clip to go through.

CraftingMom had three pieces for the body.  I did this project without viewing her tutorial at the time I did this and forgot how she used three.

spider9Then glue eight pieces of curled black ribbon onto the piece for the body that has the slits and attach by hot glue gun.  The legs should be at least 1 1/2″ in length.  I estimated mine at 2″.

spider10I then glued the second piece of the body onto the first piece and sandwiched the legs between the two.  Be careful not to apply hot glue to the middle section if you use only the two body pieces like I did or you will not be able to put your clip in the slots.

spider11Glue the two circles for the head together and then glue on the body.  Add the two googly eyes to the head.

spider12spider13Add your choice of ribbon made up into a bow.

spider6Slide the hair clip through the slits in the back.  You can clean up strands of hot glue with a blow dryer on the lowest setting.

spider14I made a fleet of spider and ran out of black ribbon on the last one so I substituted gray for the legs.  I DID try to curl it, but used different instructions that said to curl the ribbon on the wooden dowel and wet with water.  Then to bake at 250 degrees Fahrenheit for only 10 minutes.  As you can see from this image, the curl did NOT take.
