SparX Candy Review-Sugarfree Option for Halloween

October 11, 2012 by Karen

It’s crazy to think that Halloween is just around the corner.  The costumes have been picked for my three and we recently purchased a plastic treat pail for my youngest this year to take with us trick-or-treating.
My children usually hit the Snickers, Milky Way, and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups the first in their Halloween pails, which are sweet and gooey, definitely not the best for their teeth.  Healthier snacks, like pretzels or raisins stay in their pails until much later.  Now there is a new option to be sweet, tasty, and actually help their oral health – SparX.

SparX are tiny, bite-sized candies that are packaged into 4 gram packages with a mix of natural flavors:  citrus (orange, lime, and tangerine), berry (blueberry, strawberry, and raspberry), or fruit (banana, apple, and grape).

SparX candy is sweetened with xylitol, a natural sweetener made from birch trees, corn cobs, and other natural sources.  It tastes like sugar, but has fewer calories and has minimal effects on blood-sugar levels.  Xylitol is absorbed slowly by the body, creating a glycemic index of seven instead of 83 or higher like sugar.

Xylitol helps to make the surface of the teeth slippery and thus decreases the ability of bacteria to stick to the tooth and form plaque.  It takes just 15 grams or more of xylitol per day to create this effect.  Studies have shown that when combined with regular dental hygiene, daily use of xylitol oral products, like gum, mints, and candy can decrease cavities by as much as 80%!!!

SparX is made by Xlear, Inc. (pronounced “clear”).  I sampled SparX with my children and if I had to compare the taste to any other candy, I would say they are like Smarties, but not as powdery.  I loved the taste and so did my children.

I didn’t see an age recommended, but with being small, hard, candy dots, I would supervise young children while consuming.  My son at almost two lost quite a few while feeding himself to the kitchen floor, but thoroughly enjoyed those that made the trip to his mouth.

This fall, Xlear will be offering SparX Candy in a special Halloween bag, ideal for trick-or treaters.  Each bag will contain 30 individually sealed packets of SparX in a variety of natural fruit flavors and has a retail prices of $7.49.  Xlear SparX Halloween bags may be purchased online at www.xlear.com and in stores nationwide at Vitamin Shoppe.
To learn more about SparX or Xlear, please check out their website, connect on Facebook, and Twitter.
Please keep products containing xylitol like SparX away from pets, especially dogs and cats.
Disclosure:  I received a sample of SparX courtesy of One Media Squared.  The thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.  No other compensation was received.
