Summary:
Smart Cookies was released on DVD July 2 from Gaiam Vivendi Entertainment and Hallmark Channel. In celebration of the 100 year anniversary of the Girl Scouts of the USA, Bailee Madison (Just Go With It, Parental Guidance) and Jessalyn Gilsig (“Glee”), star alongside multiple Emmy® and Golden Globe® nominated actress Patricia Richardson (“Home Improvement”) in the heart-warming story about discovering what truly makes life sweet.
Review:
Julie Sterling, a realtor with the motto of “everything we touch turns to sold” has been requested to do 90 days of community service by taking on a Girl Scout troop that started with a virtual presence. This small group of ladies have been named the Fireflies.
Julie learns from the girls in her troop that life shouldn’t be just about work and the importance of sisterhood. Along the way, she reevaluates what is truly important in her personal life and also develops some important lessons in her troop as well.
The Fireflies and their troop master, Julie Sterling, face a few mishaps along the way. Some scenes are a bit silly with Julie loosing a French press from her purse when cleaning along a river as part of community service, but I think moments like this do help build the character’s quality of high maintenance. The Fireflies also learn what teamwork and determination can do for cookie sales when battling a continuous top-selling troop, The Monarchs, who don’t always exhibit the best team spirit.
With this movie being a collaborated creation with the Hallmark Channel, it has a story that creates characters we can personally relate to and an ending that can pull at the heartstrings.
