Children seem to learn really well with repetition and who wouldn’t want to do it while watching cute animated characters singing catchy rhymes? ChuChu TV is one of the top 50 YouTube channels for children and is quickly climbing. Their child-loving rhymes and songs are made by a crew in Chennai, India.
The founder of ChuChu created this channel for his then two-year-old daughter and to please toddlers when it launched in early 2013. “Chubby Cheeks” was the first video created in his daughter’s honor. Most of those on ChuChu’s team are young parents with children of their own and the videos from start to finish are done in-house.
The rhymes and kids’ songs featured on ChuChu TV also help teach important subjects, like caring for one another and sharing. Many of the videos are based on old English nursery rhymes you have probably heard before with an uplifting, modern beat and also a positive ending.
Every new video is unique. ChuChu tries to keep every new video one of a kind with lots of new artwork. That is the reason they only have done around 100 videos in around 2.5 years.
With having my own children and working with preschoolers this last year, discussing the importance oral health prevention is a must. The “Brush Your Teeth Song” would have been fun for them to watch if I would have discovered it earlier. My small disclaimer to the tooth brushing video is that young children are to use a bit less toothpaste on their brush than represented in the video – a smear or pea sized amount. And kids in the audience to the video should brush with an adult’s supervision until they are about seven years of age.
This year I will be discussing the importance of oral health with the little ones again with the addition of a literacy component. Rhymes and songs can be a wonderful teaching tool for early literacy.
We don’t know for sure the origins of rhymes from long ago, but using the repetition in these rhymes and stories help build memory and like stated before, expose kids to early literacy with sometimes pictures and music. Nursery rhymes can be passed down from generation to generation as a way of doing something in common. They are often easy to grasp and so many can feel comfortable singing and sometimes perform them together. Actions like hand clapping to rhymes and songs help strengthen motor skills too.
With ChuChu TV’s success, a second YouTube channel was created called ‘ChuChu TV Surprise‘ for children ages 0-6. This series features brightly colored animated surprise eggs, with characters from its first channel, like Mr. Harlo, the Finger Family Unicorn Elephant. Here is “Baa Baa Black Sheep” with a section on learning colors with the surprise eggs.
