Review: Reading Kingdom

Reading Kingdom  I had the opportunity to review Reading Kingdom over about the last six weeks.  It is an online learning program, geared at children ages 4-10.  I signed up my daughter, Layne, to try out the program, who just turned five last week.

Reading Kingdom was created by Dr. Marion Blank, author of The Reading Remedy and is the director of the Light on Literacy program and Columbia University in NY.  This system is to teach all six skills needed for reading and writing success.  They are: sequencing, motor skills, sounds, meaning, grammar, and comprehension.

With my daughter being a new 5-year-old, she has been working on “Seeing Sequences and Letter Land”.  I thought my daughter would need to do the keyboard and mouse training to become familiar with the keys of the keyboard and use of the mouse, but she got rather testy when I had her do some of the training so we exited out of it and let her start with the sequencing and Letter Land.

There are little pictures/icons that tell you about your child’s progress, such as if a level is completed, in progress, is not required, needs attention, or good/very good/excellent performance.  So far Layne needs attention when it comes to seeing sequences and is doing very well in Letter Land.  There is also a status bar to where your child is in the course as compared to its entirety.

Here is an example of what the section she is on looks like:

The child identifies the letters in the word such as “moon” and clicks on them with a mouse in order as they appear in the word.  The images are colorful and it shows the a picture of the word,  ex. “moon”, after the word has been identified
I do have a hard time sticking to the recommendation of how many sessions are recommended per week.  Children not in the first grade should use the program four times a week and the sessions are on average, 15 min – 30 min.  Once Layne watches Wild Kratts and plays a little PBS Kids or watches another cartoon, she quickly eats up her two hours of screen time per day that I have tried to stick with per recommendations of Dr. David Walsh.
The hostess or mascot to the program is an owl with a female voice that is friendly.  It was stressed the importance of the parent not helping the child with doing the work.  I found that I had to practice some self discipline in order to honor this request.  I guess this is good practice for me down the road.  If I was to help my daughter, the program would have a hard time understanding what my daughter truly does or does not comprehend and how to further assist her in her quest for learning.
Layne has started to spell two and three letter words other than “mom” and “dad” recently.  I am not sure if this is coming from Reading Kingdom or her starting preschool.  Maybe with more time practicing, I might have a little more direction on how Reading Kingdom is affecting her success.
If you would like to try Reading Kingdom, there is a free 30-day trial to take advantage of on the right side of the page when you click on the link.  You need internet access, free web browser, quiet room for child, and a computer with a mouse.  Reading Kingdom does also have a store with a selection of books you can purchase at http://www.readingkingdom.com/store/.  For costs of the program, it is normally $19.99/mo or $199.99 per year.  There is a reduced rate for additional readers.  If you were to sign up when starting your free trial, you get 25% discount on fees.  I hope to give an update in the next few months on Reading Kingdom and my daughter’s progress.
Disclosure:  I have received 12 months of online access to Reading Kingdom for review purposes.  The thoughts and feelings expressed are my own.
