Summary: Mrs. Bobbin isn’t feeling very well and can’t deliver the beautiful ball gown she’s made for the duchess to wear that very evening.  Even though it’s snowing outside, her daughter, Irene, bravely volunteers to make the delivery for her.  After all, Irene loves the snow.  But it turns out this isn’t just snow.  It’s a dangerous blizzard with wicked winds threatening to knock her down and steal her precious package.  But brave Irene remains steadfast in her determination to make it to the palace on time, no matter what.


Review:


William Steig had created many wonderful works during his lifetime, starting with his first children’s book in 1968.  He even created Shrek!, a picture book that was released in 1990.  Shrek!  inspired the popular Shrek movie series.  More can be learned about Mr. Steig here.  Brave Irene was originally released in 1986.  The Book and CD Set was released Nov. 22, 2011.


Brave Irene  is wonderfully told in the Book and CD Set with narration by Meryl Streep.  I love her versatility and her voice certainly adds a little extra zing to this story.  Poor Irene braves the elements to make sure the wonderful dress her mother has created makes it to the duchess, even if she has to fight for her life during a blizzard, what determination!


I feel glad that my five-year-old daughter can sit down by herself and listen to Brave Irene in her room and turn the pages for her 3-year-old sister to view with her.  Here is an image to two of the pages:

The CD has two recordings of the book.  The first does not have page turn indicators and the second recording does on the CD. 



The only problem I had with this Book and CD Set was how it was packaged.  You have to take out the book and reach down into a pocket that seemed awkward to me.  (Sorry, took picture after bringing my camera in from outside and it had fogged up from being in the cold).
  



Otherwise, a wonderful story of a brave, determined, young girl and narrated by the wonderful voice of Ms. Meryl Streep.  🙂
