300 Cub Scouts, 60 feet of racetrack:
Pinewood Derby returns to Mall of America®
WHAT: More than 300 Cub Scouts will send their handcrafted derby cars flying down 60 feet of racetrack at Mall of America® on Saturday, June 2, for the 2013 Pinewood Derby Championship.
Winners of the Boy Scouts of America council-wide Pinewood Derby pack and district level races will travel from 21 Minnesota counties and across western Wisconsin to participate in the 60-year tradition for top honors in the Championship race. Participants will range in age from kindergarten to fifth grade.
Powered by gravity, a Pinewood Derby car can reach a speed of nearly 20 miles per hour on the track. They are created from kits containing a pinewood block, four wheels and four nails. Racers can then put their own creative spin on the design of their car. The cars cannot exceed a length of seven inches, cannot weigh more than five ounces and must pass inspection by the official inspection committee before competing.
