I have read a couple of articles recently stating that because our American diets are highly processed, many of us don’t’ get enough magnesium in our diet. One article stated that half of us were not getting enough magnesium! A lab test may not get you the answers you desire on pinpointing this deficiency because magnesium is found in the cells with a large percentage stored in bone and only a small amount is just floating around in the blood.
Low magnesium may cause an array of health issues. It may cause sleep issues, muscle cramps, high blood pressure and other cardiac issues, migraine headaches, and even diabetes. Drinking dark-colored sodas, eating foods with refined sugars, stressful events or surgery, drinking coffee/tea/other caffeinated beverages, taking certain medications, and having seven or more alcoholic beverages per week can all cause us to, unfortunately, dump more magnesium out through our kidneys. ๐ Source: http://www.ancient-minerals.com/magnesium-deficiency/need-more/
With all of this being said, I was excited to try Natural Calm by Natural Vitality. My spouse and I both have family members who have dealt with some heart issues and who couldn’t use a more restful night’s sleep? Natural Calm is a magnesium (ionic magnesium citrate) supplement that is very easy to use. It’s a white powder that you just add to water, be it warm or cold, and you don’t have to eat around the time you take it. Since magnesium can improve sleep, I try to take it in a glass before getting ready for bed. The raspberry lemonade flavor is subtle and this product is lightly sweetened with organic stevia.
The daily dose for Natural Calm is 2 tsp. daily. Magnesium can work as a laxative so I would not recommend rushing into the 2 tsp. amount. Gradually work up to this and you can divide the daily serving amount into a glass in the morning and evening or as you so desire. Magnesium may help decrease stress levels and so you can decide when your body might do best with it. To know if you are taking the right amount, your bowels will let you know. The packaging says that “bowels should be comfortably loose” as a good gauge.
When I started taking Natural Calm, I was experiencing foot cramps, which I would associate to sometimes low potassium or magnesium. After a few days of using Natural Calm, my foot cramps vanished. I feel like I can fall asleep a bit easier and stay asleep more often since starting this supplement. Therefore, I wake up more rested.
Natural Calm is available in 8 oz. and 16 oz. sizes. The 8 oz. size, which I received, has a retail price of $23.95 and is to provide 56 of the 2 tsp. servings so lasting about 1 1/2 months. I received Natural Calm in organic raspberry lemonade flavor. There is also organic cherry, organic sweet lemon, original (unflavored). I took a video of the product (sorry, I am still a beginner at this) and using it at 1 tsp., not much fizz. If I go up to 2 tsp., it produces a fizzing reaction that doesn’t last long and there is no fear of bubbling over unless your glass is already very full with water.
