A few nights ago, I got to go to my first live ballet and take my daughters with. We saw Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker and it was amazing! I am not one for driving downtown in the cities, but the trip was worth it.
As a child, I remember watching the ballet on television and being mesmerized by the beautiful costumes and intricate moves done by the dancers. On stage, the production includes over 200 costumes and 10′ animal puppets that go with the emissaries of Asia, Europe, Russia, Africa, and Spain.
The backdrops are even spectacular. One includes a Christmas tree with a flickering light that does a transformation during The Nutcracker. The YouTube video below showcases “The Dove of Peace” to give you an idea of what the performance is like. Unfortunately, photography was not allowed so I don’t have any media of my own to recap the beauty of the show.
The Nutcracker was approximately 1 1/2 hours in length. The 1st act was 45 minutes and starts with Uncle Drosselmeyer prepping his toys to Mayor Stalhbaum’s Christmas Eve party. After the 1st act, 15 minute intermission was taken, and then the show resumed with another 45 minute act named “Land of Peace and Harmony” that began with the “Dove of Peace”. It began with two dancers who each had a wing that had a total wing span of 20′. There is a cute and talented children’s cast included in the performance too.

Such a beautiful performance. My daughters were in the 3pm show at the Orpheum. One was a little mouse and the other was a snowflake. I’m kinda biased, but those sweet little dancers really steal the show. 🙂
