With my job, I deal with paperwork containing information that should not be left just lying around on the kitchen counter, but I do work primarily from my home. I was allowed to review the Master Lock Security File Box 7148D that fits my needs of protecting documentation while working from home.
The Master Lock Security File Box is 6″x13 1/2″x10 1/2″. Most documents would be kept side down due to the height of this file box. It is fitted with a lip around the inner edge for hanging folders, which are not included. The file box is made of steel and comes with two keys (duplicates are not available). After inserting the key and turning to unlock, you must press and slide a lever on the front in order to unlock the lid. The handle is made of plastic, but seems durable. The file box is constructed of steel.
Sorry – I did not realize the cardboard enclosure had created some dust. The gray haze in this picture was easily wiped off.
This file box is lightweight and so I think it would be easy for transport. Little dings to the exterior can show up with not a lot of force so just be careful if you use it for transporting.
I thought the lock worked fine in the unit I had received. This product is not fireproof and there is no claim that it is. The list price for the Master Lock File Box is $21.09.
I think this is a nice looking locked file box for storing paper documents, like for transporting in a car or securing documentation at home. It would be great to store tax documents. My husband and I are both self-employed so our stack of documents needed for our tax appointment would easily take up two Master Lock File Boxes, but they would probably keep us better organized than our current system of stacking all papers retained in a cabinet for the year until after filing. Then they are stored away for seven years.
This locked file box could even be used to lock up items you don’t want your toddler getting their hands on. I think the price is realistic and I like the functionality for storing paperwork that you don’t want some passerby to easily view. I feel hanging file organizers are a needed add-on for documents that would otherwise lay loose and could start to lose their original shape from curling on the bottom of the box.
