Marie Callender’s Pot Pie Review

December 16, 2011 by Karen

Today was 28 degrees in central Minnesota with a strong, chilly wind.  I bundled up myself and children to just spend a little time outdoors and to trek our 1/4 mile long driveway to pick up the mail from our mailbox.  It can get worse, but brr!

I was seeking something warm and quick for us to eat for dinner and decided to serve Marie Callender’s Pot Pies, one in beef and one in chicken.  Each pot pie is two servings.  I had the beef with my son and my daughters had the pot pie in chicken.  We had leftovers because they are generous portion sizes for my kids.  A serving size is listed as 1 cup.

Since the children wanted something quick, I decided to try the microwave version.  There is also still the conventional oven method listed too.  The oven method takes a little over an hour. For the microwave instructions, I just had to open the top of the carton, peel it back along the perforation, tear off the top and slit the crust.  The top stays off for heating.  It took 10 minutes on high for each pot pie.  Internal temperature needs to reach 165 degrees.

Here are the frozen pies
I maybe should have made my slits larger on the beef pot pie because it did ooze out
I have been having issues lately over-exposing on my pictures, but this is the beef with a view of its contents-beef, gravy, potatoes, carrots, and celery
Here is the chicken pot pie.  The contents did not come out with this one

The Marie Callender’s Pot Pies have a great tasting, golden, flaky crust.  The contents inside had large sections of tender meat.  Maybe a little more vegetables would have been nice with the hearty gravy.  It was a nice, warm meal to serve on a cold day.

Overall, the taste was great, maybe a little salty.  I try not to use a lot of salt in my regular diet due to a family history of heart disease so maybe I am a little more sensitive to it.  Reading the nutritional facts, I was a bit bummed about the fat content, 29 g per serving and 31 g per serving, respectively.  11 g was saturated fat.  The sodium was a bit hefty, 780 mg and 800 mg per serving.  I wish the ingredients used were a bit more healthy.  This was a treat, but for health reasons, something I would not have that often.

Marie Callender’s Pot Pie varieties include:
