I recently viewed Klondike, a mini-series that aired originally on the Discovery Channel. It was recently released as a two disc collection on Blu-ray and DVD from Cindedigm and Discovery Communications.
The cast for Klondike includes: Richard Madden (Game of Thrones), Abbie Cornish (RoboCop), Sam Shepard (The Right Stuff), Tim Roth (Reservoir Dogs) and Augustus Prew (Kick-Ass 2), and executive produced by Academy Award® nominee Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Gladiator, Thelma & Louise). Klondike is based on Charlotte Grey’s best-selling book, Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich In The Klondike.
Wow! I can’t imagine living during the times of the gold rush. Klondike focuses on the life of two young men, Bill Haskell (Madden) and Byron Epstein (Prew), who are lifelong friends on a mission to stake their claim. They battle treacherous weather to reach Dawson City and their claim near Dawson City. They shortly after battle the greed of other men that leads to one of them losing their life.
Success in finding gold does come to the remaining other, but with a huge price. His best friend is gone and when he leaves Dawson City, he finds the woman he loves will not leave with him and her cousin who helps him find gold, falls through the icy waters, never to be seen from again. This mini-series is based on actual events and even showcases a young Jack London. Klondike does show us the lack of law enforcement and the popularity of brothels from the time period so definitely not for children, but a great drama for adults.
A two-disc set, the Blu-ray and DVD also features exclusive cast interviews, behind-the-scenes looks and a special bonus entitled Discovering Klondike that explores the fascinating history of Yukon’s gold rush and how it was brought to the screen for Discovery Channel’s Klondike.
