Joy Williams was a new artist to me. I really do like the sounds of her latest release, Venus, that will be available June 30.
To give you a little bit of history on Joy and her music career, her first song was written in 2013. She wrote over 75 songs for this record the year following. Williams has won four Grammy awards and has released four solo albums. Her self-titled album came out in 2001. Williams performed with John Paul White as the Civil Wars for five years (2009-2014).
Venus has given Williams a chance to reclaim her own identity from The Civil Wars. This title is to bridge Williams’ as a solo artist with that as The Civil Wars.
A surprising source of inspiration for this album was Justin Timberlake. Williams and Timberlake met in 2011 when they both were on Letterman. Timberlake facilitated her introduction to Matt Morris who co-wrote most of the record and co-produced the album.
In this alternative coming of age collection, the songs feel personal and Ms. Williams wants Venus to feel like people can find their own stories in it and be moved. Williams felt like this album was her becoming the woman she’d always wanted to be, finally comfortable in her own skin.
