Jovial Pasta

December 21, 2011 by Karen

I thought I was fairly knowledgeable on whole grains until hearing of Jovial and einkorn pasta.  Jovial began in 2010 by its founder, Carla Bartolucci.  She lost both of her parents at a young age to cancer and this led her to a personal and professional interest in organic foods and how essential food is to wellness.  Jovial pasta uses the purest, most ancient species of wheat called Einkorn.  Einkorn is the first wheat ever to be cultivated some 12,000 years ago.

The philosophy behind the creation of Jovial:

It is our dream to change the future of agriculture by creating consumer demand for ancient and heirloom varieties of food. We have a deep commitment to support a small-scale, sustainable economic model that focuses on farming first and then considers the entire process all the way through to the shelf. We believe the purest food we all are all seeking can only come from the purest seed.

Our mission is to create authentic, unique and satisfying foods you can trust, with a time-honored taste that embraces the heritage of our ancestors. Our crops are lovingly cultivated by small-scale farmers and our products are masterly crafted by Italian artisans, resulting in the finest nutrient-rich, distinctly flavorful foods.

WE TAKE OUR MISSION VERY SERIOUSLY AND PROMISE TO:

  • Rediscover the purest ancient and heirloom varieties of ingredients, replenish their supply and transform them into products that enhance nature’s innate goodness.
  • Honor individuals with food intolerance by sourcing only the finest allergen-free ingredients to create delicious and wholesome foods they can enjoy with confidence.
  • Support the small-family farmer and pursue a sustainable business model in which we are directly monitoring the growing, harvesting and processing in limited geographical areas to reduce our fossil fuel consumption.
  • Offer the cleanest and most recyclable and compostable packaging options available, because caring about the environment means considering the entire process, from seed to shelf.

I received the Jovial Whole Grain Einkorn Spaghetti and Penne Rigate for this review. The past is certified organic by QAI.  Each package contained six  2 oz. servings.  It is also vegan.  Each serving packs 9 g of protein!  The highest I could find in my current whole wheat products was 7 g per serving. Einkorn also is a good source of dietary fiber, zinc, iron, and Lutein, an antioxidant. The ingredients are: Organic Whole Grain Einkorn and Water.  It is made in a facility that also processes eggs.

Cooking time was 10 minutes in boiling water.

Here is the spaghetti served with homemade Alfredo sauce and I chopped up some broccoli for an evening meal.  It has a slightly nutty flavor and I think more palatable than whole grain pastas made with Durum.  It isn’t grainy and is a brownish-red color when ready to eat.

Along with a good selection of whole grain einkorn pasta, Jovial makes many other nutritious  products to also consider.

Disclosure:  I received samples of Jovial whole grain einkorn pasta for this review.  No other compensation was received.  The thoughts and feelings expressed are my own.
