Scooby-Doo was a childhood favorite cartoon for me so I thought it would be fun to see Daphne & Velma. Warner Brothers sent me this movie for free to review.
This title tells a modern tale of how Daphne and Velma met as teenagers and worked on solving their first mystery together before they became Mystery Inc. The film stars Sarah Jeffery (Disney’s “Descendants: Wicked World”) and Sarah Gilman (ABC’s “Last Man Standing”), and is produced by Ashley Tisdale and Jennifer Tisdale’s Blondie Girl Productions.
Daphne and Velma are students at Ridge Valley High, a high-tech high school. I should back up in saying that Daphne Blake is a recent transfer student and internet bestie to Velma Dinkley, who has been already attending.
With being immersed in high-tech, Ridge Valley High is very in tune with social media. The top student gets chosen to work with a high-tech company, Bloom, that is closely tied to some of the daily operations of the school.
Over the last few years, the top performing students vanish and come back being “zombiefied”, lifeless versions of their former selves, before getting picked for the Bloom internship. Will Daphne and Velma be able to solve what is happening to the kids before it is too late?
My kids enjoyed this movie and have watched it a couple of times. As an adult viewing Daphne & Velma, I thought the story moved along a bit slow at times. Daphne and Velma could be viewed as good role models for young girls with being intelligent, fearless, and fluent with technology.
Daphne and Velma, the smart and resourceful women of Scooby-Doo fame, come to life in this all-new mystery,” said Mary Ellen Thomas, WBHE, Vice President, TV Marketing, Family & Animation. “Young girls will be delighted to discover how these clever heroines come together for their very first mystery demonstrating that no mystery is too big for these “meddling” girls to solve!”
“Daphne & Velma” is produced by Blue Ribbon Content and Blondie Girl Productions with Production Services provided by Lifeboat Productions Inc. Ashley Tisdale (Young & Hungry), Jennifer Tisdale (Her Universe Fashion Show), Amy Kim (Confess, Chosen), Jaime Burke (Cassandra French’s Finishing School, Quantum Break) and Suzi Yoonessi (Olive and Mochha: First Kiss) serve as producers, with Yoonessi also directing from a script written by Kyle Mack & Caitlin Meares.
