How Does My Garden Grow?

July 25, 2011 by Karen

Well, we have made some progress since planting our garden the first weekend in June.  We have been able to enjoy radishes, lettuce and a few peas so far.  More to come, I hope.
Progress on new experiment-growing in 8″ PVC pipe.

One thing we have noted with the PVC gardening is the higher up, the less moisture.  We will need to install some type of irrigation for at least the top row in the future.  I had spinach on the second row and it started and then went blah.  I am thinking from too much moisture for it.

My two eggplant and one of the peppers.  They are brushing up in height against the next row.

One view of the garden.  I wish I knew of an organic way to do this outside of plucking off the caterpillars, but I did dust for cabbage moths today with Sevin.

We planted dill in the PVC garden this year.  See what has come along to visit?  Swallowtail  caterpillars.  I did see  a butterfly around the area and then little yellow eggs appeared on the dill and a few on the carrots.

The little black thing on the dill in this picture is an itty bitty caterpillar.
Close-up hubby took of one of the caterpillars tonight.

Layne has had fun checking on the caterpillars daily to see how much and how quickly they grow and change.
