Add a Little Holiday Fun to Christmas Eve

December 3, 2015 by Karen

Christmas is all about spending quality family time together and creating some magic for our children.  I think it is important to explain the real story of Christmas to my kids, but it’s also hard not to get sucked into the promise of gifts and Santa Claus coming down the chimney.

Christmas Eve is probably the day most young children look forward to throughout the year so why not make it extra special for them this year?  Here are some ideas to add magic to this wonderful day and get your children feeling festive.

Make Them a Christmas Eve Box

To make your children even more excited about Christmas day, you can present them with a Christmas Eve box.  This box should contain essential Christmas related items that they can play with and use before they go to bed.  You can fill your box with anything that you fancy but some great ideas are pajamas , slippers, books and snacks.  You can decide how large you want the boxes to be and how much you spend, but make it exciting and fun to open.  Tailor it to each child, but include similar items.  Your kids will feel as though Christmas has come a day early and they will love that you have helped them get ready for Santa Claus.

Do a Good Deed

An important part of Christmas is sharing and thinking of others.  Encourage your children to get involved with this idea by doing a good deed on Christmas Eve.  You can do something small such as donating money to a charity online or donating food and toys to a children’s hospice or animal sanctuary .  Another idea would be to take a meal and visit a senior citizen in the community who isn’t able to be with friends and family this holiday season.  Nobody should be alone for Christmas and spending this time together will be special to you all.

Start a Family Tradition

Every family will have their own traditions for Christmas.  Start a brand new one with your children that they can really get involved in.  Maybe you could start a Christmas Eve movie night, with children’s films such as The Grinch  or The Polar Express.  You could take your family out for an evening walk or light a candle in the window, so Santa Claus knows where your house is. Koch scented candles can be bought online and come in a variety of festive scents.  These could also be lit to make your home feel cozy and festive for a family board game night.  Whatever you decide to make your tradition, make sure you choose something that every member of your family can partake in.

It’s the smaller details that will make Christmas Eve special for your children.  They will already be excited about Santa bringing them presents, but there’s no harm in adding some extra magic to the day.  If you do it well, the spirit of Christmas will flood your home and you’ll have a happy family.
