Hello is a unique book. It was created by Forrest Wright and edited by Carrie Phair. Its illustrations were done by Carmen Navarro.
This title is 66 pages and you get to be its author! The words on the pages become all about you. Maybe you can think back to a family member and how you wished you would have asked questions to have learned more about their life or maybe you did interview them but didn’t have a good format to store the questions and answers to then be able to easily reflect back on. I think like this about my grandmother and grandfather. Hello is the solution to these problems. It is a great way to simply share facts and memories about you with your children.
The pages of this book allow you to first fill in your basics, like your eye color, birthday, birthplace, etc. There are 50 questions in total to help tell your story.
Some of the questions asked are funny and I feel would be quick to reply to, like what you hated eating or one of your favorite games to play. Some questions are more serious and thus require more thought to then put your answer(s) into words. An example of this is ‘the one thing (toy, clothes, gift, etc.) I always wanted as a kid but never got was …’, ‘my friends would have awarded me most likely to…’, or writing down a secret you want to share.
I like how having these questions answered gives you a collection of the author’s handwriting. I have pieces written by my grandmother and mother-in-law, like handed-down recipes, and it is fun to look back at their handwriting. It gives a screenshot of what words were used during their lifetime and just provides an awesome memory of what their writing style looked like since we are all unique with this.
Forrest Wright, the creator, suggests doing a few pages in Hello daily if possible. We don’t know how days ahead will be so it is good to fill this book out when yet of sound mind and body. It’s a really neat title. I am hoping to buy more copies soon so I can customize Hello for each of my children.
