Guthrie Summer Camps have engaged children and teens
in the magic of theater for more than 20 years.
This summer the Guthrie offers a perfect opportunity to inspire young people through theater games, creative movement and engaging fun. With uniquely gifted instructors and a wide range of offerings, Summer Camps at the Guthrie are an ideal way to spend a week igniting passion for theater in young people grades 3-12; week-long camps begin July 6 and continue through August 14. All levels are welcome and camps run Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Complete camp information including schedules, teaching artists’ bios and registration information is available at www.guthrietheater.org/camps.
Summer Camps at the Guthrie offer a wide range of performing opportunities for children and teens, including acting, musical theater, Shakespeare and comedy. New this year is a technical theater camp, which teaches teens the tricks of the trade in the world behind the stage.
The Guthrie will also be participating again in the Arts on the River Day Camp June 29-July 2 from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Campers (ages 9-11) will play music, create stories, build books and bake bread while exploring the Riverfront District. Arts on the River Camp offers children a new experience each day to build creativity at four top arts centers, including the Guthrie Theater, Mill City Museum, Minnesota Center for Book Arts and MacPhail Center for Music. Registration is through the Minnesota Historical Society.
Guthrie camps are taught by an impressive roster of teaching artists led by Mark Rosenwinkel. Rosenwinkel’s professional acting career spans nearly three decades and includes work at most major Twin Cities theaters, including the Guthrie. Other teaching artists include performers with local and national credentials in areas including character acting, vocal performance, sketch and standup comedy, stage combat, choreography, European-style clowning, dialects and more! Guthrie 2015 summer camp teaching artists are Betsy Benjamin, Carin Bratlie, Shanan Custer, Paul de Cordova, Laura Esping, Jon Ferguson, Michelle O’Neill, Aaron Preusse, Jan Puffer, Mark Rosenwinkel, D’Arcy Smith, Andrea Tutt, and Eric Webster.

It’s Showtime

Unleash your child into the wondrous world of theater and watch as their imagination runs wild! Through music, movement, storytelling and mask-making, your child will sample a variety of building blocks that are essential in creating live theater. Loaded with discovery and teamwork, this fun-filled week promises to inspire, delight and entertain – building a foundation for a lifetime of creativity.

Make ‘Em Laugh
Session A: July 13 – 17, 2015

Campers will experience the joy of improvisation, including unique exercises in creating quirky characters and scenes, as well as the fine art of slapstick, double takes, spit takes and split-second joke timing.
Act It Out
July 20 – 24, 2015

Budding thespians unite to dive into scenes and monologues from popular plays and make them their own. Campers will learn the scoop on acting techniques and character development through exercises used by the pros!
Musical Theater Journeys

Campers will learn what it takes to create a musical in just one week. Guthrie teaching artists will direct, choreograph and make campers’ imaginative ideas come to life.

Camp Shakespeare
Session A: July 6 – 10, 2015

Campers will enjoy exploring this no-holds-‘Bard’ look at the work of our greatest playwright, while experiencing training in acting, voice and movement. Previous experience with Shakespeare is not necessary.
Broadway Bound

Immerse yourself in all aspects of musical theater with training in singing, dance and acting, while acquiring the confidence and bold techniques required for larger-than-life productions. Campers will create their own musical theater piece.
Extreme Slapstick

Explore character development and theater techniques for a wide variety of physical comedy, including sight gags, mask work, clowning, stage combat and much more.
Totally Technical

Through hands-on instruction, campers will explore technical areas of this world-class professional theater. Guthrie artists and staff will demonstrate how the pieces of the puzzle come together – from hearing a designer’s vision to seeing it realized for the stage – and share insider tips and tricks of the trade.
