Until my children came along, I was clueless about green products, especially for my laundry. Some of the main stream laundry detergents contain carcinogens, which are directly involved with causing cancer. ๐ Products to clean our clothes are of course not ingested, but do have contact with the largest organ in our bodies, our skin. That’s a bit scary.
I have been using Green Virgin Products Soap Nuts Liquid over the last several weeks. It is an all-in-one laundry detergent and fabric softener made from natural soap nuts. This product is non-toxic, free of chemicals, hypoallergenic, super concentrated, and has a net negative carbon footprint. You still want to keep this product out of the reach of children.
Check out this YouTube video explaining a bit more about soap nuts. They even help clean the gray water, water that goes down into the sewer, with being antimicrobial!
Green Virgin Products carries the dried berries, or soap nuts, that you can add a few at a time to the wash in a wash bag. I sought an even more simplified product with the soap nuts liquid. The liquid is provided in sample size, 8 oz., and a 16 oz. The two larger sizes are provided in a pump bottle. Dried or liquid forms of the soap nuts work in HE washing machine as well as a top loading machine.
To use liquid soap nuts, simply use 2 pumps for an average load in a HE machine and 3 pumps per load in a top loading machine. If you are washing a large or very dirty load, add more liquid soap nuts.
The soap nuts used by Green Virgin Products are USDA certified organic. The berries that become soap nuts are grown in India or Nepal. The liquid detergent is made from the soap nuts in the U.S.A.
I thought Green Virgina Products Soap Nuts Liquid worked quite well with my laundry. I live in the country and my kids are allowed to play with the chickens, the sandbox, and dirt if they find it so my level of dirt may be higher than some so I often put in three pumps for good measure. My laundry comes out with a light, clean scent.
I have often been line drying this summer and the towels are not as stiff as with other detergents I have used. If you have hard water, you may want to use Calgon in conjunction with soap nuts to soften the water and make it more effective. Do NOT use fabric softener with soap nuts.
Green Virgin Products Soap Nuts Liquid in an 8 oz. pump bottle for $18.95. The 8 oz. size that I received will do 120 HE wash loads if you add 2 pumps per load.
