As a family, we try to sit down to have a game night together at least every other Friday night. Games have been a great way to pass the time with this month of stay at home orders in Minnesota. Along with providing an opportunity for social interaction, games can provide us with many opportunities for learning beyond the social aspect.
UNO was brought out at one of our last game nights and it provides a good time to recognize and match numbers and colors, which is visual discrimination. It also provides a little bit of friendly competition.
With digital technology being so common in the home, I think our fine motor skills don’t get strengthened as well as they were in the past with so often being able to simply swipe a screen. The task of holding cards and other small objects provides us with ways to practice fine motor skills.
Cards sometimes need to be counted, depending upon the game and this is good practice too. Games like UNO and many others also allow us to engage in strategy. What’s your favorite family game?
