My family and I try to try to be kind to the environment by practicing the three R’s (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle). I was hung up on one item in the household that I had not found a successful alternative, reusable napkins. I had ordered a set of blue cloth napkins on Amazon about a year ago, but they sit in the cabinet because they don’t absorb well and are almost slippery in my opinion. We fought them migrating off the table and our laps – not fun.
Funkins seems to be steering us in the right direction. They have created vibrant, reusable cloth napkins made for kids. Their designs are so fun and cute! Funkins hold up so much better than a paper napkin or paper towel would too.
We are all parents at MyFunkins Ltd. and care deeply about teaching our children responsibility for our environment. We also know that having fun is a rite of childhood! And so we have created this fun, eco-friendly product that children LOVE. We’re sure you and your children will, too!
In 2005, Lisa Baumgartner, founder and CEO of Funkins, was searching for washable napkins suitable for her son to use and pack with his school lunches. She also had a bigger goal, to help cut school lunch waste with paper napkins. When her two other children came about and were school age, there still were no cloth napkins for kids available. Funkins was founded in 2011 to fulfill this need.
Funkins are 13″x15″and are double-sided with patterned prints so your child has two patterns of fun and are great for mixing things up a bit. The material used is 100% cotton and Funkins uses low impact dyes. The fabrics are CPSIA (Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act) compliant, and are Lead and Phthalate free.
To clean Funkins, they are machine washable in cold with like colors and tumble dried on low. Use only non-chlorine bleach, if needed. It is recommended to wash them before their first use.
My kids love pulling out the Funkins at meal time. Besides functioning as a napkin, they can be used as a place mat for your child. My girls prefer to fold up their Funkins as napkins and my son prefers his as a placemat. Both ways are certainly okay. You can also bring pack them with in the vehicle to help avoid some messes when out and on the go too. My kids have not experience any huge liquid spills lately, which is unusual, but I did try a staged water spill from a cup on the table and Funkins seemed to quickly absorb the liquid.
Here is a list of uses on the Funkins website:
- In a lunch box
- As a napkin or a place mat
- Cupcake or cookie decorating stations for school parties – replace those throwaway table cloths
- At restaurants or on airplanes
- To wrap around freezies, popsicles and ice cream cones
- At the office
- As a party favor
- As a burp cloth
- As a hostess gift
- As a Teacher’s gift
- Baby blankets for dollies
- To brighten your festive holiday table
- At theme parks
- Tie one to your purse, diaper bag or backpack – looks fun and great for easy use
If you prefer products that can be labeled when at school and so forth, you can use a ballpoint pen to the label of your Funkins. A Sharpie will bleed through the label/tag. There is a line on the label to write your child’s name.
My oldest loves this feminine and bright butterfly design.
How about a cute little mermaid print? Some of the mermaids even have glasses on this print that my daughter loves and relates to.
Funkins are made in Canada and retail for $10 each in the Canadian Dollar, which is $9.12 US Dollar. They come in over 150 patterns. Holiday themed patterns are available too. They would be great at Christmas and other family gatherings or just to add something bright and colorful at home during the holidays.
If your Funkins is damaged upon receipt, the company will be happy to replace it or to provide a web credit for equal value. Returns must be sent back to us within 21 days of your purchase.
Funkins cloth napkins have received the Parent Tested Parent Approved Winner Seal (ptpa.com) and Invited to exhibit at the 2013 Golden Globe Boom Boom Room.
They are sold exclusively at MyFunkins.com. They also offer art smocks and aprons, lunch bags, and wet pouches.

I love the idea, and the patterns. I don’t love the price, though. I wish they were more cost effective. I’d love to get at least 6 so I could always have them in rotation for my kids lunches. I’ll definitely check out the website and maybe look for sales and other items because the idea is ingenious.
