I am always open to new ways my family and I can spend more time together. My children are all old enough now to take on at least some board games and we recently tried Fishing Camp: The Game.
This game accommodates up to eight players and it is labeled for ages 4 and up. My youngest is 4 and I would personally think this game to be better suited for those 5 or 6 unless you have an adult designated to help answer all the questions with the young child and recite the fun fishing facts.
The game comes with everything you need to play. Each player selects their boat piece and chooses a level they want to play at. Level 1 is for beginner and level 4 is for the advanced with being the hardest in regard to question cards. Level 1 is recommended for ages 4-6, level 2 for 8- roughly 11, level 3 for teenagers, and level 4 for adults.
A card with the selected level is then placed in front of each player. The youngest player goes first by rolling the die and moves that number of spaces (lily pads) on the game board.
There is a Shore Lunch Island that players can be sent to read a Fishing Camp fun fact out loud. There are 100 fun fact cards included with the game.
If the player lands on a yellow lily pad, they are instructed to draw a questions card, which has questions broken down by what level they are playing at (levels 1, 2, 3, or 4). If the player answers the card correctly, they get to keep the card that is usually worth a fish caught (written on the card what weight and type of fish it represents). 100 question cards are part of the game.
There are also some cards in the questions card set that if answered correctly, reward the player with a GPS card. The player with the GPS card can take a short cut to the Docks (end of game). There is only one GPS card and so it can change hands as the game is played out. The answers are coded on the side of the card and can be read with the enclosed reader (pictured above) after an answer has been given.
In this game, my eight-year-old got to the Docks first and had several fish. She spent some time at The Honey Hole and got to keep drawing fish cards as long as she answered her level of questions correctly.
You need to be the first to the Docks with at least one fish to win. If a player gets to the dock first without any fish, they then move to the Last Chance Launch spot on the board and can start fishing on their next turn to earn cards before hopefully someone else gets to the Docks with fish.
Fishing Camp: The Game is quite a bit of fun. Players can learn a bit of knowledge or test they knowledge they already have. It’s a great family activity when you can’t get out on the boat. 🙂
