When I was younger, I suffered some pretty substantial sunburns. This is not good for a fair-skinned girl of Scandinavian heritage. I have gotten wiser over the years with sunscreen use and watching the amount and times of exposure to the sun. I still like having a product on hand in case anyone in my household gets too much sun or if we accidentally lapse on the sunscreen protection.
I was recently introduced to a company called Welmedix Consumer Healthcare. Welmedix is noted for their over-the-counter wound care products. They have allowed me to review two of their products, First Degree Burn Care Cream and SunBurnt Therapeutic After-Sun Gel, which are for after sun care and minor burns.
This is an over-the-counter homeopathic remedy specifically designed to treat mild to moderate sunburn. It is formulated to remedy the overheating and dryness of skin, peeling, pain and redness caused by sunburn. Its homeopathic extracts work quickly to cool overheated skin, soothe and hydrate skin, and reduce the appearance of unsightly redness and peeling. Only SunBurnt after sun gel contains a patented combination of three active naturals plus non-sticky aloe to provide a speedy after sun recovery.
The three active naturals are:
- Calendula Officinalis Q for burns
- Cantharis Vesicatoria 2x for sunburns
- Echinacea Angustifolia Q for dryness, itching, and burning.
These three all natural ingredients are derived under the principles of Homeopathy and are manufactured in the U.S.A. while following the regulation of the U.S. FDA.
SunBurnt is available at CVS, Walgreens, Duane Reade, Kerr Drug, Amazon.com, CVS.com, and Drugstore.com. Its suggested retail is $4.99-9.99 depending upon product size.

First Degree Burn Spray and Cream:
First Degree Burn Cream is an over-the-counter (OTC) cream burns of the skin that occurs in the home setting, like cooking, grilling, curling or straightening hair, or even working in the garage. It is designed to sooth and cool burns, protect against infection, and help reduce the appearance of scars.
First Degree Burn Cream contains the following active natural ingredients to help with healing:
- Calendula Officinalis Q for wound healing
- Cantharis Vesicatoria 3x for burns and scalds
- Echinacea Angustifolia Q for antiseptic purposes
First Degree Spray provides maximum strength relief from pain caused by burns. It instantly relieves pain, helps to prevent infection, and cools the burn on contact. First Degree Spray may be used on its own or in conjunction with First Degree Burn Cream, which would also help reduce the visibility of scars. The active ingredients are different from First Degree Burn Cream.
First Degreee Pain Spray contains the following active ingredients:
- Benzoicaine 20% for pain relief
- Triclosan 0.13% for antiseptic purposes
To use, apply immediately after experiencing a minor burn. For adults and children (two years of age and older), apply evenly on the affected area until completely covered. Repeat 2-3 times daily until symptoms subside. For children younger than two years, please consult a physician.
* Always consult a physician if you are uncertain to the severity of your burn or if you have any questions.
First Degree products are available at Walmart, CVS, Rite Aid, Amazon.com, Meijer, Walgreens.com, Target (online only), Bed Bath and Beyond, Drugstore.com, Kinney Drugs, Food City, Pathmark, Kerr Drug, and Duane Reade. The suggested retail price starts at $6.74 for the First Degree Burn Cream and $7.99 for the Burn Spray at most retailers.

My summary of First Degree Burn Cream and SunBurnt After Sun Gel:
Well, so far my family and I have been good about protecting our skin and so far no burns. I tried First Degree Burn Cream on my unaffected skin. It is a white cream that distributes well and I could feel a slight cooling sensation on my skin under normal circumstances. It has very little odor to the product. The 3/4 oz tube I was sent has a twist on top and is easy to dispense from the tube. It dries quickly.
SunBurnt After Sun Gel comes in an easy to squeeze tube with flip top lid. It comes with a lift and peel safety seal that was on very well. The product is a clear gel with a slightly sticky feel when initially applied. Then it dries and is absent to feel. After it was rubbed on my arm, I could feel a coolness just sitting in the house and a stronger degree of cooling with light blowing on the area where the product was applied and had dried, which occurs quickly.
SunBurnt and First Degree are both made in the U.S.A. I think having something on hand for minor burns is a good idea. I do have a little hesitation with the safety from a few of the inactive ingredients listed in these two products, otherwise a nice over-the-counter product.
