In my household, arts and crafts are very important. As a mother of three, I like to spend the time playing and bonding with my kids. One of the best ways we do this is to have art and crafts sessions together, like our pony bead sun catcher project.
With trial and error from past craft projects, I’m going to share with you some of the best materials I’d recommend. You should be able to have hours of fun with this variety of different materials.
Papier Mâché
Many people like to avoid papier mâché because they think it’s too much work. Well, I can tell you that once you get the hang of it then it really isn’t all that bad. You also need to realize how versatile papier mâché is. By using this to make a model you’re going to create something strong, durable and great looking. I always used to dread the thought of using papier mâché to do anything. But now it’s one of my art and craft staples, and I can’t imagine a session where I wouldn’t use it!
Wood
There is so much that you can do with wood that it’s a wonder people don’t use it more often. The great thing about it is the different types of wood you can get. I like to use balsa wood to create models because it’s lightweight and adaptable. If we’re making any sort of furniture or ornamental pieces then I normally try to use wood that’s a bit stronger.
Casting Materials
If you fancy getting a little more creative and in-depth then I’d suggest you consider casting materials. These are excellent when it comes time to casting models and such. Now, of course, if your kids are involved, you might want to supervise them when it comes to using casting materials. As long as you oversee what they’re doing, there should be no problems involved. Casting supplies are an essential part of the arts and crafts process. And if you want to expand the experience and really go all out you need to get hold of some.
Plasticine
What kid doesn’t love to use plasticine?! I would highly recommend you get hold of plasticine if you haven’t already. You can buy packs with a huge array of colors. My kids are occupied for hours playing with the plasticine, making models, and moulding things. And the great thing about plasticine is you can do anything you want. There are no instructions to follow so it gives the kids’ free reign.
As you can see, arts and crafts are very versatile, and this is what I love about them. You can use almost any kind of material and still create something great.
