I unfortunately missed seeing “When Calls the Heart” air as a series on the Hallmark Channel, but now if you are like me, you can capture the first two episodes of this series now out on DVD with When Calls the Heart: The Dance. The television series was inspired by the writings of Janette Oke in When Calls the Heart from her Canadian West Series.
When Calls the Heart: The Dance was produced and directed by Michael Landon Jr. It features a young woman, Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow), who has left her wealthy family to teach in a small mining town called Coal Valley. A group of single miners venture into town to help re-open the mine that had been abandoned recently due to an explosion that took some of the lives of local men.
Elizabeth has a mutual interest in the local mounty, Jack Thorton (Daniel Lissing), but he finds himself in competition with Billy Hamilton, one of the new miners interested in Elizabeth’s affection. Some are worried about this group of bachelors coming to town, but others are welcoming. They plan an upcoming Coal Valley festive saloon dance and events. Valuables start to disappear in town while they are busy preparing for the celebration and Jack assumes his rival is the thief. This title also features Lori Loughlin as Abigail Stanton, a widow. You might remember Lori as I do from “Night Court” when I was a child.
I like the nostalgia and romance of this movie. My spouse thought the pace was a little slow, but it has an innocent story-line and showcases the strength of friendship and support among women.
