I love baking homemade bread. There’s something about the aroma it creates while baking and the taste of fresh bread that is so delectable. If you want to skip a few steps and dirty a few less dishes, a mix can be a nice option to yet savor that homemade taste.
Tribes-A-Dozen makes a kosher line of three Voilà! Hallah Egg Bread Mixes. The three mixes are: Simply Spelt, Traditional, and Wholey Wheat. Tribes-A-Dozen simplifies the process of making bread without sacrificing flavor.
The founder and president of Tribes-A-Dozen is Leah Hadad. She currently hails from Washington, D.C., with her family. Before founding the company, Leah practiced as an attorney at law. Leah taught herself how to cook and bake. She believes that baking bread is a spiritual experience that defines our humanity.
Hallah or egg breads are also called barches, brioche, kalács, osterbrot, or twisted bread. Egg bread can be enjoyed by itself, as a sandwich bread, or being made into French toast or bread pudding. Hallah has deep spiritual meaning in the Jewish faith, but traditional egg bread is enjoyed by many cultures.
I was sent all three flavors of Tribes-A-Dozen Voilà! Hallah Egg Bread Mixes. The mixes can be made with a bread machine, in a bowl with wooden spoon, and with a stand mixer. I tried a mix per method suggested.
Traditional Egg Bread Mix
For those asking “what is hallah (challah) bread,” our Traditional is the classic egg bread baked at home for generations around the world. This blend of carefully selected premium ingredients bakes into a fragrant Hallah, a nourishment for the soul as much as the body.
Ingredients: Unbleached unenriched wheat flour, unbleached and enriched wheat flour (niacin, iron, thiamine, riboflavin, folic acid, malted barley flour), turbinado sugar, sea salt, and organic flavor. Suggested Retail is $5.99
I used a stand mixer with the traditional mix. My three-year-old helped out.
You need two large eggs that are at room temperature, 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil, warm water, a little flour or oil for the board. It is optional to add sugar to the egg wash and sesame or poppy seeds to dress the crust.
After the ingredients have been mixed, the ball of dough needs to be oiled and placed in an oiled bowl to rest for 10 minutes.
Then the dough is transferred to a counter or board and divided into 3 equal balls.
Then the balls can be placed in an oil or parchment-lined bread pan. You can also braid the dough before placing it in the bread pan.
Allow the dough to rest and raise for 45 minutes..
Bake for 25-30 minutes. You can insert a toothpick in the center to test if it is done baking. Cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before breaking.
Wholey Wheat Bread Mix
Nourishing and delicious, our Wholey Wheat is made from premium organic whole grain wheat flour. It bakes into a honey infused Hallah loaf rich with old-world authenticity.
Ingredients: Organic whole grain wheat flour, brown sugar, turbinado sugar, sea salt, and organic flavor. Suggested Retail: $5.99
This was the easiest of the three methods – using the bread machine. You just have to make sure your bread machine has 1 1/2 lb. capacity.
I placed the ingredients in the bread machine (follow order in your bread machine instructions). The instructions after that are similar to how it would be with a stand mixer/or in a bowl. I wanted to try braiding the bread so I did the dough cycle and then removed it. Baking was done in the oven. The Wholey Wheat mix calls for a few tablespoons of honey in the dough. If you measure the oil and use the same spoon to measure the honey, it slides right off the measuring spoon.
Simply Spelt Bread Mix
Our Simply Spelt is made from organic ancient whole grain Spelt flour. Spelt’s natural high content of fiber, vitamins, and minerals – combined with its unique, subtly sweet, nutty flavor — makes our Simply Spelt nutritious and delicious.
Ingredients: Organic whole grain spelt flour, brown sugar, turbinado sugar, sea salt, and organic flavor. Suggested Retail: $6.99
We did this mix with a wooden spoon and bowl. My seven-year-old made it with a little help. A few tablespoons honey are used with this mix too.
