Title:  MOM, I’M NOT A KID ANYMORE: Navigating 25 Inevitable Conversations That Arrive Before You Know It Publication Date: May 7, 2013, by The Experiment Distributed in the U.S. by Workman Publishing Company (workman.com) $14.95 • Trade Paperback • 256 pages ISBN:  978-1-61519-078-2 • Also available as an ebook

Review:  I received a copy of this book to produce an honest review.  My children are still quite young, but I know the tween and teen years will be here soon enough.  In I’m Not a Kid Anymore, Sue Sanders shares a collection of conversations she has had with her daughter in a truthful and sometimes candid way.  This isn’t a lesson plan or a “how to” book, it’s a collection of essays on how Ms. Sanders approached discussion topics that could be found awkward by some.  Okay, probably most.

I’m Not a Kid Anymore shares a glimpse into the teen years, all with slamming doors and mood swings.  Ms. Sanders was brought up by conservative parents, just as I was.  She wants to make the opportunity for conversation always an open door with her daughter, unlike how it was for her and I growing up.  She’s not saying she was a perfect kid, but admits what she has done in the past to daughter and shares what she has learned.  It reflects the importance of genuine communication with our children and the importance of support and understanding we all need.

Sue Sanders’ writing has appeared in The New York Times, the Oregonian, Parents, Family Circle, and on Salon and Babble, among others. Her stories have been included in the anthologies Ask Me About My Divorce and Women Reinvented. She lives in Portland, Oregon, with her husband and daughter. www.sue-sanders.com
