Weave Hair Barrette

December 8, 2011 by Karen

I experienced all of the 80’s and remember having hair barrettes with weaved satin ribbon.  I even remember I had one that was lavender and white.

Oddly enough, Family Magazine featured how to weave a hair barrette a while back.  It made me reminisce and want to recreate this for my daughters.  The materials needed are just two 1 yard pieces of 1/8″ satin ribbon and a double bar barrette.  It wasn’t too hard to find ribbon online.  I just got some off of EBay, but I was surprised how hard it was to find double bar barrettes.  I had a few lying around that I re-purposed for this project.
My oldest is crazy about pink and purple so hers is on the right and my youngest daughter likes green.  I wanted to pair it with red, but when I finally got going on hers, she changed her second color to a light pink.  You can see this in the last few pictures.

Slide the ribbon over the bend in the barrette and make the lengths of ribbon on each side of the barrette equal.

Bring one end of stacked ribbon over the bar and down through the center.  Do the same with the other end of stacked ribbon and create a criss cross pattern.  I found I could keep them looking a little neater if I would snug up the color underneath before the top layer so it would sit a little more snugly on top.

Keep weaving back and forth.  This project said 1 hour!  Once you get started with weaving the ribbon, it does not take that long.  I did one as I was prepping supper tonight.

You will need to weave one side to come out with the other side or as they say in instructions, “same edge” and tie a knot

You can just leave the excess hang

Or put little knots at the end.  It may be beneficial to singe the end of the ribbon with a lighter or use Fray Check to keep the ends from fraying.

Can I ask where you got the double bar barrette? I’ve been looking everywhere for one that just slides closed, rather than separate parts.

Suzanne, I will e-mail you too, just to make sure you get this. I think I found them by Goody. I see Amazon.com carries them and there are some on E-Bay. I will mail link vs. post because the links may change over time.
