I love the concept of knowing how to grow your own produce and so when the opportunity to review Back to the Roots Organic Mushroom Grow Kit came up, I was happy to collaborate in a review.
This product includes a block of organic plant-based soil that was infused with pearl oyster mushroom spawn and also a small spray bottle. It is non-GMO, 100% organic, and made right in Michigan.
After removing the perforated cardboard front of the box, you can cut an ‘X’ in the plastic substrate bag. Under the plastic flaps, the surface of the soil needs to be worked up a little by scratching it with a fork. After that, the substrate is removed from the box and the media is given a water soak . The substrate is placed (while yet in the bag) face down in water for for 6-10 hours or overnight. Some of the soil may fall off. Don’t be alarmed.
After that, you shake off the extra water from the bag and place it back in the box. The mushrooms are to grow best in indirect sunlight and it takes up to a week to start growing. Twice a day, the mushroom substrate is to be misted twice a day (7-8 sprays each time).
After 18 days, here is what my mushrooms looked like. We have to heat our home in the winter and so it is set at 68 degrees Fahrenheit. The humidity is 46%. The first harvest yielded about half a cup. I used them to flavor my stuffing around the holidays.
I am now trying to grow a second crop. Back to the Roots Mushroom Grow Kit has a price of $24.99 and can be ordered online at https://backtotheroots.com/collections/mushroom-grow-kits/products/mushroom-grow-kit. My kids thought it was fun to watch the mushrooms develop and were eager to help watering. They were tasty.
