Title: Welcome to the Farm: How-to Wisdom from the Elliot Homestead
Author: Shaye Elliott
ISBN:978-1-4930-2601-2
Publisher: Lyons Press
I grew up on a hobby farm and so taking care of the land and animals has always been true and dear to my heart. In Welcome to the Farm, the author was not raised on a farm but was introduced to the wholesomeness of farming from her boyfriend during her teen years who was raising a steer for the county fair.
As an adult, she started with raising kale in pots and meat rabbits in the backyard of their home in Alabama. This quickly blossomed into the romantic idea of owning her own cow before having land that materialized a decade later.
As the author, Shaye Elliott mentions, trial and error is the mantra of a farmer. I think anyone seeking to lead a simple life can also relate to what is being said. Produce can vary upon conditions of the season and health of the animals. Shaye shares her personal anecdotes of trial and error in this book for great stories and factual information – from gardening to raising livestock, like gangster chickens. 🙂 Recipes are included for human consumption, like homemade pasta and pickled eggs, and also for livestock, such as fermenting grain.
I loved the colored photos dispersed among the pages filled with insight and homespun goodness in Welcome to the Farm. If you are looking to simply start raising some vegetables in the backyard or consider raising livestock for food, this book is for you.
