Cassy Joy Garcia tells you just how it is. She starts off this book with her personal struggle with weight gain, experiencing joint pain, plus difficulty staying awake during the day. Cassy tried a few things to get healthy, like going all vegan for a year, doing a bunch of cardio, and a few other weight loss tricks. She had enough and then went by her “Four Pillars of Health” – mindset, food, fitness, and sleep/hydration. Cassy also developed a 28-day Fed & Fit project (a.k.a. the project) to try to help jump-start a healthy lifestyle.
In Fed & Fit, there are more than 175 recipes that are Project friendly, exercises with Juli Bauer, New York Times bestselling author and fitness coach; a blank template for journaling, a list of foods encouraged/discouraged during the project, discussion on portion sizes, the Project online, mention of the Fed & Fit app, and then of course the 28-day Food & Fitness plan.
For books on healthy eating, this book intimidated me a bit at first with its size. Once I actually got going on digesting what Cassy was saying, I appreciated the scientific tidbits behind better nutrition and even just tips on improving overall health, like wearing amber/orange-colored goggles after the sun goes down to block out cortisol-stimulated blue light emitted from screens and to help prepare your body for rest.
Personally, I had a little difficulty removing all the sabotage foods listed. Brown rice, quinoa, and grass-fed dairy were some of those considered sabotage foods, but were lower on the list. I have liked the few recipes I have tried in this book and hope to try the exercises included soon.
