Title:  Honest Medicine: Effective, Time-Tested, Inexpensive Treatments for Life-Threatening Diseases
Author:  Julia Schopick
Innovative Health Publishing
Available at Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble and other major online outlets

Julia Schopick is an award-winning blogger of HonestMedicine.com, who focuses on health care and healing.  She started on this journey of writing Honest Medicine as a way to share her experience as a health advocate for her spouse, who fought a brave battle with brain cancer.

Julia’s spouse was having difficulty healing from a brain surgery.  Julia found a little known treatment in 2001 called Silverlon that helped him promptly heal after 10 months of trying others that didn’t provide success.  Honest Medicine showcases stories from people worldwide that have been helped by products that are not commonly suggested by the medical team and are often low-cost and with little or no side effects.

“Educating patients about medical alternatives is critical,” says Schopick. “My husband’s doctors were not at all interested in prescribing any treatments beyond surgery, radiation and the expensive, often toxic drugs they learned about in medical school and in their journals. And they scoffed at learning about the non-toxic treatments I found through my research that actually ended up extending his life by so many years.”

Honest Medicine highlights how Silverlon helped Julia’s husband, Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) for a variety of illnesses, intravenous Alpha Lipoic Acid for liver disease and some cancers, and then the Ketogenic Diet for epilepsy.  The stories from the individuals featured in this book are amazing, but I do not feel unbelievable.

My educational background and some of my work experience flows with Western medicine, but in the veterinary field.  Near the end of my career, there were a few clients that had done their research and had seen their pet’s signs of illness improve with alternative treatments, like one young chocolate lab who we saw with an injury to the ligaments of her knee.  The owner applied essential oil of peppermint over the joint and felt her dog’s level of comfort had greatly improved with the use of the oil.  Peppermint is noted for its anti-inflammatory properties so it made sense.  Large animal vets were also starting to consider colloidal silver and honey for some of their wound treatments in horses too.  It was new and somewhat scary for them, but there were some very positive results being seen.

I think Honest Medicine is a unique read and if I was battling some of the illnesses discussed in the book, I would personally be open to these not so well heard of treatments to try to improve my quality of life and possibly cure the illness.

Is there a new updated edition? The only one I found is outdated – from 2011 – five years ago.

That’s a great question! This title was published in 2011 and there has not been another release since then. I just learned about this book in the fall and I think the information is still pertinent because the treatments the individuals received in this book are still not mainstream to my knowledge.

Voice from the past here. Hey, great to see you and your book announcement, Julia! Our late mutual friend Hal Wright would be proud. Keep me posted, OK?
