Ideas to Try and Keep the Home Kept

November 11, 2015 by Karen

As any parent knows, with kids around, keeping your home tidy 100 percent of the time is almost impossible.   Accidents happen and they will spill things, splatter food and put their sticky hand prints in places you never thought they’d fathom, and toys can occupy a lot of space.  This is great quote reflecting on how challenging it can be with little ones –

“Cleaning your house while your kids are still growing up is like shoveling the walk before it stops snowing.” – Phyllis Diller

Keeping your home tidy when you have little ones is a lot of hard work; it is doable, but it can take a lot of effort.  Of course, the amount of effort it takes to keep your family home looking good will depend on your definition of tidy.

To help make it a little easier for you to keep your family home tidy, I thought that I would share a few useful tips and ideas:

Tidy as you go and teach the kids to do the same

When it comes to keeping your family home clean and tidy, tidying as you go is crucial.  It takes a lot longer to clean up a big mess than it does to put away a few small things.  As well as getting into a routine of tidying as you go, it’s important that you teach your children to do the same.  I wish I would have started idea earlier with my kids.

Set a rule that says they can only get four toys out of their play box at once.  This means that if they have four toys out and want to play with another one, they need to put one of the toys away.  Having this rule in place is a fantastic way to teach children about tidying up after themselves, from a young age.

Get a helping hand

The chances are that if you are a working mom, you won’t have as much time to focus on housework and tidiness.  Instead of struggling to try and keep on tops of things, while working as well, consider getting some help.

Sometimes, all it takes to keep our homes in good order is an extra pair of hands.  If time is tight, consider hiring a cleaner or housekeeper to help you keep on top of the housework, keeping the house cleaner and tidier.  To find the help that you need, look out for the best domestic staffing agency in the area.  Be clear about the type of help that you need, and you should find the perfect person to help keep on top of the housework.

Have adequate storage

To have a tidy home with small children around, the most important thing is to have lots of storage space.  Children come with lots of objects; from toys and games to changing mats and high chairs.

Whether you invest in built-in storage (if you have the room) or storage solutions like crates and boxes, it’s up to you. Just make sure that around your home, especially in family areas, there is as much storage space as possible.

Keeping the family home tidy is never an easy task.  However, by trying these tips, you can make staying on top of things a little easier for yourself.
