My eight-year-old has had a few opportunities to take photos on her own, like at summer camp or to simply highlight images she finds important and attractive. I have worked with her on learning a few techniques and tricks, but National Geographic Kids released a great reference book called Guide to Photography: Tips & Tricks on How to be a Great Photographer from the Pros & Pals at MyShot a few months ago. It is geared for children ages 8-12 and is written by legendary National Geographic photographer Annie Griffiths and children’s author Nancy Honovich.
National Geographic Kids Guide to Photography shares facts on how photography has evolved, techniques, and photo equipment (ranges from smartphones to even SLRs and underwater cameras). Fun and unique facts are sprinkled through the book in a format kids enjoy. Tons of color images are included to assist with learning too.
I have been attending meetings with a local photography group for the last year and I am surprised that this book taught me a few things too. My daughter has been using disposable film cameras, but hopefully with what she has learned from this book, we can graduate her soon to a digital camera. This will allow her to easily increase the number of photographs she takes with the option to delete unwanted images as she grows her skills.
National Geographic Kids Guide to Photography may be found online and with retailers nationwide. It has a suggested retail of $14.99 and comes in a colorful paperback.
