I have seen several pretty cakes on Pinterest and from a local gal who seem to be completing their cakes with fondant. I personally had not worked with it until last week when trying out the non-stick fondant roller rolling-pin by Baking Time. This little gadget come with two different sizes of spacer rings so you can get the perfect thickness. The fondant rolling-pin can also be used for other dough, like for biscuits cookies, and even for the kids playing with play dough.
To make this review true to its name, I did make my own fondant to roll. The recipe I used was with marshmallows, Jello in the flavor of your choice, a small amount of water, and a lot of powdered sugar.
I took off the rings to initially roll out a large piece for a small two layer cake. I lightly sprinkled the fondant with powdered sugar to keep it from sticking and used a non-stick cooking mat to roll it on. The Baking Time Rolling Pin is 9 inches in length. The rings help you roll out to 1/8″ or 1/16″. I did not have a textured pattern mat, but it is to work well with them too.
This is my cake and I would have to say that the cake unfortunately was not smooth with how I applied the butter cream frosting underneath and that was reflected on how the fondant looked on it.
It was nice to have the guides for smaller strips of fondant. I look forward to using this rolling-pin to make uniform sugar cookies.
My oldest daughter and I played with the extra fondant and made hearts. It was a fun activity to do together.
The Baking Time Fondant Roller Rolling Pin sells on Amazon.com for currently $9.99.
