Healthy family meals can be a not so fun topic. A family member(s) may wrinkle their nose at something brought to the table if it has just the notion of being healthy and healthy meals have a rap for being more complex or time-consuming to prepare. Woman’s Day Easy Everyday Lighter Dinners hopes to debunk the typical thoughts associated with healthy family meals.
This book states that it is not about “diet” food. The recipes are lower in fat and calories and filling. Some recipes have a red ♥ to show that they are heart-healthy in regard to fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium. 53 recipes meet this criteria. Recipes are included for main courses, side dishes, and desserts in this title.
In previewing the recipes of Easy Everyday Lighter Dinners, the selections seems flavorful with a variety of spices and the ingredients called for are fairly standard. With living in the Upper Midwest and not having that long of a growing season, I would say some of the recipes may be a bit seasonal with produce needed. And if you are pressed for time during the week, some meals can be prepared ahead of time and frozen or cooked in the crock pot.
I like that this book has a few recipes for ingredients I have, but don’t know much about on how to use in a dish, like Meatless-but-you’d-never-know-in chili with wheat berries. There is a recipe for Fettuccine “Alfredo” that has no cream, but has cauliflower, Romano cheese and 1% milk to make it creamy and healthier than at least the standard recipe I used to go by. There are even a few holiday cookies! I look forward to trying Stained glass cookies this next week.
