An auxiliary input jack for play and built-in USB port for charging are provided near the base. 
We were impressed by how hefty this speaker felt and seems to be sturdy. For being character themed, it was very efficient at connecting with my Android based phone via bluetooth pairing. I almost reached our office downstairs when it lost connection between the speaker and phone at roughly 38 feet away with going through one floor in the house so I thought that was pretty good. I recently tried to connect the Hello Kitty® speaker with my laptop via the audio jack and the sound quality was very good, no feedback. 
There are volume controls on the speaker and you can also control the level with your phone, computer, or other connected device. There is also a play/pause button on the speaker. A LED status light is built on the unit to let you know the status of charging or pairing with a Bluetooth device.
