I vaguely remember another blogger sharing “10 Truths Young Girls Should Know” now already a few years ago on Facebook.  The post went viral and it is a great piece by the author of this book, Kari Kampakis.  If you haven’t seen it, check it out on her blog at http://www.karikampakis.com/2013/07/10-truths-young-girls-should-know/.

Kari knew her calling was to be a mom (has four girls) and also a writer, but she actually thought her calling was in fiction.  After a not so pleasant reception from literary agents over a seven-year period, she changed gears and instead of entertaining readers, she wanted to encourage them.

Her viral post offered support to parents and helped bring on a blessing.  It led to an acquisitions editor e-mailing her not long after and asking her to publish what became her first book, 10 Ultimate Truths Girls Should Know.

I would have to say this book is probably best suited for tween/teen girls and parents.  I liked reading it because it gave me an outer perspective on what I experienced as a teenager and some insight into what my two daughters might face in years to come.

10 Ultimate Truths Girls Should Know covers 10 topics – Popularity, Confidence, Reputation, Interacting with Boys, Self-Worship, Perseverance, Patience, Image, Inner Beauty, and Self-Talk.  Through this book I was saying to myself, “yes, yes, yes!”  As a teenager, you spend a lot of time and thought thinking of the person you want to become and not always listening to the little cues from Him.

Author Kari Kampakis shares how girls need to view kindness being more important than popularity.  You can make someone’s day by sitting with them when no one else will in the lunchroom.  Or how people do not peak at the same time and you don’t want to be the one that peaks in high school, which I thought was interesting.  I remember thinking how important it was to be on the homecoming court or excelling at high school sports.  It’s okay to peak later in life and we are all born to fly.

10 Ultimate Truths Girls Should Know provides insight for teen girls that I hope will help them steer clear or help fill their toolbox with ways to better handle rejection and the popular mean girls.  This book showcases how girls don’t have to harm their honor, spirit, and future to find love, acceptance, and stability.

Kari Kampakis is a newspaper columnist, blogger, and former children’s photographer from Birmingham, Alabama. Her writing has been featured on HuffPost Parents and reflects her passion for family and God. A graduate of the University of Alabama, Kari holds an MBA and public relations degree. She and her husband, Harry, live in blessed chaos with their four daughters and a dog named Lola. Learn more by visiting her website at karikampakis.com.
