One of my good friends recently shared one of her pins from Pinterest on how to make homemade caramel in your crockpot with just a can of sweetened condensed milk. I was skeptical, but had to give it a try. Pictured above, is my caramel.
The recipe I tried did not say to line the crockpot with foil, like the one I am including with this post and I did get rust rings in my crockpot. Otherwise, this is easy to do and yummy!
This original recipe is on eighteen25:
caramel in a can
remove the paper label off your can of sweetened condensed milk.
line your crockpot with foil (to prevent a rust ring).
place your can (unopened) in the crockpot.
fill with water till just above the top of the can.
cover with crockpot lid.
cook on low for 6 hours (or overnight).
use tongs to place can in a cool water bath until comfortable to touch.
open can and enjoy!

This recipe is as old as houses here in Europe. I think it was invented in Spain since it’s called “dulce de leche”. In France we call it “confiture de laid. Quite good actually.
